Identity theft and identity fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain.

Unlike your fingerprints, which are unique to you and cannot be given to someone else for his or her use, your personal data (Social Security number, bank account or credit card number, telephone calling card number and other valuable identifying data) can be used fraudulently.

Identity theft is a growing problem in the United States. In 2003, victims of identity theft totaled 9.9 million, with losses to business and financial institutions topping $48 billion and out-of-pocket expenses for victims totaling $5 billion, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s 2003 Identity Theft Survey Report.
Identity Fraud Expense Coverage includes, but is not limited to:
  • Costs of notarizing fraud affidavits or similar documents for financial institutions or credit agencies
  • Costs of certified mail
  • Lost wages up to $500 per week
